Lower East Side
Business Improvement District Services


The Lower East Side Business Improvement District (LESBID) is a community of more than 400 merchants and property owners. Established in 1992, LESBID is managed by a Board of Directors and consists of local merchants, property owners, residents and elected officials.

LES BID boundaries are as follows:

Orchard Street from East Houston to Canal Street; Delancey Street from Allen to Suffolk Street; Grand Street from Forsyth to Ludlow Street; East Houston Street (south side) from Allen to Ludlow Street; and portions of Stanton, Rivington, Broome and Hester Streets.

Each BID property owner's mandatory special assessment covers the cost of the following services to which they are entitled:


y Sanitation Services
To supplement services provided by the New York City Department of Sanitation, the BID maintains a "Green Machine" to clean and deodorize sidewalks and curbs and to plow snow Sunday through Friday.
 

y Graffiti Removal
All graffiti is removed from buildings and public spaces in the district twice each month.


y Free parking for shoppers and motor coaches Up to four hours of free parking.tors in our secure, attended facilities. T

y Advertising
The BID advertises in various print and radio media, including The New York Times, New York Daily News, Time Out New York, New York Magazine, Where Magazine, The Onion, WOR, WINS, WTJM and WQXR. The BID also subsidizes cooperative ads for BID businesses.


y Light Security/Greeter Services
Two unarmed security officers patrol the district from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through
Sunday to provide a greater sense of security for shoppers, merchants and residents.


y Publicity Services
The BID actively promotes the goods and services found in our district, and individual BID merchants to members of the press. Some of the media sources for which the Lower East Side BID helped compile stories include: The New York Times, New York Daily News, Crain's New York, Time Out New York, New York Magazine, Where Magazine, Women's Wear Daily, the New York Press, The Villager, Jewish Week, The Forward, WNYC and WBBR.


y Special Events
The Lower East Side BID hosts free special events in the district, including the Orchard Street Music Festival, the "Lower East Side a Go-Go" fashion show, the GO EAST discount program street festival and the Seward Park Film Series.


y Promotional materials
The BID produces and distributes the Lower East Side Shopping Guide, a color brochure featuring a business directory and a map of the area, and the GO EAST shopping and dining discount card/brochure, featuring over 70 local businesses offering discounts up to 40%


y Internet Site
The Lower East Side BID maintains a web site, which can be accessed at
www.lowereastsideny.com.


y Business Assistance
The BID launched Forward, a cooperative fashion design incubator located on Orchard Street between Broome and Grand Streets, to help young designers start their own retail business. The BID also assists with businesses' grant and low-interest loan applications, and and assists merchants in working with City and State agencies.


y Capital Improvements
The Lower East Side BID, in conjunction with the New York City Department of Transportation, received a $900,000 grant from the Federal Intermodal Transportation Efficiency Act to improve the pedestrian environment on the Lower East Side. Community enhancement projects include additional lighting fixtures, landscaping, street furniture, informational signage and public art.



y Storefront and Website Matching Grants
The Lower East Side BID, in conjunction with Chase Bank and Fleet Bank, offer matching grants to businesses to encourage them to improve their storefronts and create/improve their websites.


y Discounted parking for BID members
Merchants may park their vehicles within our lot and are eligible for special monthly rates: $100 per car and $175 per van or truck.


y Tree Planting
Through a partnership with the New York City Parks Department, the BID offers merchants and property owners the opportunity to receive free trees to beautify their storefront. Plantings take place twice a year: in the spring (March 15-May 15) and in the fall (October 15-December 15).



y Orchard Street Pedestrian Mall
The Lower East Side BID sponsors a year-round Sunday Pedestrian Mall on Orchard Street between Delancey and East Houston Streets.


y Lower East Side Shopping Tour
Each Sunday from April through December, we host a free walking tour of the Historic Orchard Street Shopping District, which is conducted by a licensed NYC tour guide.


y Tourism Services
The Lower East Side BID operates a nationwide toll-free information line (1-866-224-0206) and a Lower East Side Visitor's Center, located at 261 Broome Street (between Orchard and Allen Streets). The center is open to the public seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and has local and citywide tourism brochures.
